I was on an extended visit "home" to Chicago, after a trying illness at my actual home in Oregon. When I arrived, I opened the blinds to our backyard deck and gasped at this lush geranium on the table, displaying florets of red-orange, tropical punch, and violet. Extraordinary! The box indicated it had come from my favorite garden nursery, an enthusiasm my dear friend and I share. Of course, I didn't need to paint it because I had the plant. But plants come and go, whereas a painting lasts forever.
