In case I hadn't mentioned, I'm an avid gardener. Some years ago, when I began planting every hydrangea I could find, I ran across the oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia for fellow gardening nerds). I now have two of them, one snowy white. This one in my painting starts the season with creamy flower panicles and lime-colored leaves (shaped rather like a hand). It turns a variety of autumn colors (like a sweet gum tree), from pale gold to orange, red, and burgundy. The stems are copper-colored. Full disclosure: this sits right outside my large bathroom window, so I often have a chance to view it up close. In fact, to paint this, I set up my painting gear in my bathroom. But I loved painting it, and I love how it turned out on my textured Arches paper. Truth be told, I get more comments on this painting than about any other in my studio.
